Wastewater genomics

Article Abstract:

The complete genome sequence of Candidatus Accumulibacter phosphatis identified as one the most prevalent organisms in enhanced biological phosphate removal (EBPR) sludges is reported. The metagenomic sequencing effort provides a much-needed genetic blueprint for EBPR research, and the potential metabolic network delineated by the genome should form the basis for new experiments and process optimizations.

Deciphering bioplastic production

Article Abstract:

The long-awaited genome sequence of the most widely used polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) producer, Ralstonia eutropha H16 is reported. PHA are natural polyesters synthesized in the form of discrete intracellular granules in abundances that could reach 90% of dry cell weight.

Antibiotic production from the ground up

Article Abstract:

The soil bacterium Saccharopolyspora erythraea is utilized for the industrial production of the antibiotic erythromycin A. The genome of this bacterium shows presence of several genes coding for complex metabolic activities and antibiotic resistance.
