Western Isles ready to bite the poll tax bullet

Article Abstract:

The proposed regional budget programme for 1992/93 provides for increased poll taxes and water charges in Western Isles, Highland, Fife and the Central Region of Scotland. The Western Isles is reducing its budget as it services a loan incurred to cover lost deposits in the defunct Bank of Credit and Commerce International. Highland and Fife have earmarked funds in preparation for the council tax. The Central region is limiting its severance scheme availability and may close some schools, in line with reduced spending policy.

Poll tax evidence row refuses to die down

Article Abstract:

British courts' decisions on the acceptance of computer records as evidence in poll tax cases are polarized. Clerkenwell Magistrates' Court in London ruled that Camden LBC's computer files were hearsays and inadmissible as evidence. However, Highbury's magistrate Dorothy Quick allowed authorities to collect poll taxes based on computer records. In view of these events, Environment Sec Michael Heseltine has promised to institute amendments to correct this tax loophole.

Regions predict leap in poll tax

Article Abstract:

Scotland's regional governments will increase their poll tax due to an expected increase in the non-payment of poll taxes to enable them to meet local budget requirements. Poll taxes and amounts of tax increases will vary in every region. The projected increases will proceed in spite of Secretary of State for Scotland Ian Lang's move to stop local governments from raising the tax by announcing in advance the new rules that would limit their local budgets.
