When the honeymoon ends

Article Abstract:

A number of mergers have been carried out among law firms in Manchester, England between fall 1996 and Oct 1997. These mergers include Addleshaw Sons and Latham which has combined with Booth and Co, and Dibb Lupton Broomhead with Alsop Wilkinson. Halliwell Landau and Cobbetts planned a merger which was prevented by a clash of cultures. Cobbetts is seen as more conservative than Halliwell and the two companies have different management styles. Hammond Suddards was created from a merger in 1988 and does not see a merger unlikely unless there is an exceptional fit.

Wealth of advice

Article Abstract:

Private client work may not appear attractive for ambitious lawyers, but many law firms in Manchester, England, are happy to develop this side of their business. Private client work includes divorce, residential conveyancing, tax planning and pensions. There is no niche specialist in this area in Manchester. Some companies exclude divorce from the services they offer, and they may not want to become involved in divorces affecting clients using other services.
