Article Abstract:

Chartered accountants Barry Witkin and Guylaine Leclerc were awarded the Walter J. Macdonald Award for their outstanding works as the best English-feature and best French-language feature masterpieces for 1997. Witkins, who works recently as the president of Merchant Commerce Group Inc., was complimented for the article entitled "Loan sharp," which deals with various methods of allocating sources of funding. Forensic accountant Leclerc, on the other hand, was commended for her work, "Blanc comme neige," a detailed analysis of the alarming growth of illicit financial transactions in Canada.

First Alberta student to win UFE gold

Article Abstract:

Barry Remai is the first Albertan to win Canada's Governor General's Gold Medal on the Uniform Final Examination (UFE) for accountants with a high score of 386. Furthermore, he was also awarded the Edmund Gunn Prize of $500. Remai has previously won awards for accounting exams and has been a consistent University of Saskatchewan honor student. He attributes his success in the UFE to his personal study preparations and group study practice with his friends. He advises future UFE examinees to follow his study plans to ensure their success.

A well-deserved retirement

Article Abstract:

Gordon Cowperthwaite was granted the Sempier Award by the International Federation of Accountants for 1997. The Sempier Award is the most prestigious award in the world of accounting, given only once in five years to an accountant who have made an important contribution to the profession. Cowperthwaite, a former senior partner of Peat, Marwick, Mitchel and Co, retired in 1996. He considers the award as the highest achievement in his career.
