Demonstrating competence: the portfolio interview for management positions

Article Abstract:

A portfolio can be a valuable tool for students during job interviews. Portfolio are compilations of written and non-written materials which highlight the competencies and achievements of students. Portfolio development enables students to recall certain activities which can be brought up during the interview. Students can also use portfolios to emphasize certain skills to the interviewer as well as assess whether they are right for the job they are applying for. The charteristics of a portfolio and Wittenburg University's study on the portfolio expectations of practitioners are discussed.

Adjusting the interview to avoid cultural bias

Article Abstract:

The conduct of employment interviews should take into consideration the cultural backgrounds of job applicants. Sometimes, highly qualified applicants do not show the external positive personality traits required by employers from prospective employees because of ethnic affiliation. For example, the Native Americans' reserved and unenthusiastic nature is usually construed by interviewers as a sign of their unsuitability for particular jobs. Steps should be taken, therefore, to ensure that interviews are programmed to gauge the abilities of applicants regardless of their ethnic roots.
