Technology and educational support offered by university career centers

Article Abstract:

A survey was conducted on members of the International Assn for Management Education to examine career centers' use of technology and methods for training students in its applications. Results showed the centers' growing use of technology to enhance job-search processes exemplified by the wide variety of software programs used to manage the services offered by career centers. The types of technology currently used to serve student and recruiter needs include electronic databases, computer Internet access, online job vacancy bulletins and interview scheduling.

Prepared to perform? Employers rate work force readiness of new grads

Article Abstract:

The Michigan State University's Collegiate Employment Research Institute developed a study to measure the performance and skill levels of new college graduates in collaboration with employers. The graduates were divided into technical and nontechnical groups and were rated according to nine major competencies. Results showed that the new graduates were not adequately prepared for work. Therefore, skill development should first be taught in universities and colleges through career development programs with employers.

The job market for '97 grads

Article Abstract:

The employment prospects for 1997 college graduates are promising. A survey of employers showed that about 60% plan to increase the number of new college graduates they hire. Most job opportunities will be available in the service sector given the plan of service employers to increase their hiring by about 16.2%. Engineering and computer-related skills are also the most in demand while the starting salaries of bachelor's degree holders are expected to rise by an average of 3.7%.
