CZECHIA: DEMAND FOR COATINGS STABILISING

Article Abstract:

According to a report by the foreign trade information office BFAI of Germany, demand for paints and coatings is stabilising in the Czech Republic after a decline in the early 1990s. Demand is growing fastest in the road vehicle, building and polygraphic industries. The market share of western importers in the Czech coating market was at 30% in 1996, after under 2% in 1986. Germany is the largest importer of paints and coatings to the Czech Republic. Between 1990 and 1996, domestic production fell from 191,000 t to 66,000 t. Capacity utilisation rate was on the average only at 45% in 1997.

The federal statistics office reports that in 1997 the production of black offset printing inks in Germany grew by 38.1% to 84,757 tonnes worth DM 431.3mn. The production of coloured offset printing inks grew 18.3% to 50,497 tonnes worth DM 447mn, that of coloured flexo printing inks 13.5% to 43,865 tonnes worth DM 405mn, other black printing inks 10.2% to 22,582 tonnes worth DM 123.2mn, black flexo inks 8.5% to 1,608 tonnes worth DM 10.9mn, and other colourful inks 5.8% to 166,400 tonnes worth DM 1,023.7mn. *
