United States chemical companies expected to benefit from globalization include Eastman Chemical Co., which reports that international trade accounts for 40% of its sales. Mergers of petroleum chemicals companies are also described. The chemical industry is making sincere efforts to reduce releases of toxic wastes.

Disappointment likely in 2001

The chemical industry's net income increased during the first three quarters of 2000, compared to 1999. However, financial results fell in the last quarter and are expected to continue decreasing in 2001. Information is included on the production of ethylene, plastics and chlor-alkalis.
