Critical exponents and self-similarity for sol-gel transition in aqueous alginate systems induced by in situ release of calcium cations

Article Abstract:

Rheology methods are used to monitor the sol - gel transition in aqueous alginate systems induced by in situ released calcium cations. The critical exponents were independent of alginate concentration and close to the percolation prediction in alginate with lower molecular weight and in alginate with higher molecular weight, the critical exponents changed with alginate sample and concentration suggesting two categories of the gelation as growth and cross-link

Nanostructure changes with Krafft transitions of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes in aqueous NaCl solutions

Article Abstract:

Temperature-scanning small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurements are used for studying nanostructure changes with the Krafft transition of complexes of poly(acrylicacid) with oactadecyltrimethylammonium (PAA-OTA) in the aqueous solutions at various NaCl concentrations. The results have shown that the nanostructure changes are accompanied with the endothermic enthalpy change.

Multiple steps and critical behaviors of the binding of calcium to alginate

Article Abstract:

The binding of calcium to alginate of low and high molecular weight and different guluronate/mannuronate ratios is investigated in dilute solutions using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), [Ca.sup.2+]-selective potentiometry and viscometry techniques. The results have revealed distinct and successive steps in the binding of calcium to alginate with increased concentration of Ca ions.
