Crystalline monolayer of dodecanoic acid adsorbed on graphite from n-heptane solution

Article Abstract:

A study using both incoherent elastic neutron scattering and coherent neutron diffraction examined the adsorption characteristics of dodecanoic acid from n-heptane solution. This investigation of the formation of a two-dimensional crystalline monolayer of dodecanoic acid revealed that the long axes of the monolayer molecules were parallel to the surface. Moreover, the melting point of the monolayer is 328 K, which is about 1.15 times the melting point of the bulk mixture. The melting point of the monolayer adsorbed from heptane solution thus differs from that of the monolayer from pure liquid dodenoic acid.

Competitive adsorption of simple linear alkane mixtures onto graphite

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the formation of solid layers adsorbed onto graphite from binary alkane mixtures and pure alkanes using a combination of incoherent elastic neutron scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. Results confirm the formation of solid monolayers adsorbed from liquid alkanes above the bulk melting point. Findings also suggest that a single solid monolayer is formed above the bulk melting point for hexane, octane, nonane and decane adsorbed onto graphite from their respective liquid phases.

Preferential adsorption from binary mixtures of short chain n-alkanes; the octane-decane system

Article Abstract:

The competitive adsorption of the alkanes n-octane and n-decane adsorbed from the binary liquid mixture onto graphite is studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), neutron diffraction, and incoherent quasi-elastic neutron Scattering (IQNS). The data from a combination of techniques that can provide detailed structural and compositional information on the binary mixture of the alkanes octane and decane is presented.
