Effect of oil on the surfactant molecular curvatures in liquid crystals

Article Abstract:

A study which used phase analysis and small-angle X-ray scattering examined the impact of adding oil to the self-organizing structures in a polyoxyethylene dodecyl ether (C12EO)-water system. The aim of this research was to determine the transformation of the curvatures of surfactant molecular layers in liquid crystals. The addition of decane to the hydrophilic C12EO7 system resulted in the H1-I1 transition while the addition to the C12EO3 system facilitated the L alpha-H2 transition. This indicates that the added oil has an opposite effect on the curvature of the surfactant layer. OIl led to drastic curvature change.

Formation of nematic liquid crystals in suspensions of hard colloidal platelets

Article Abstract:

Liquid crystal phase transitions in suspensions of hard colloidal platelets were studied using a system that consists of particles with short-range repulsive forces. Polarization microscopy revealed that the liquid crystalline phase was of nematic origin. The findings were compared with L. Onsager's experimental observations on orientational ordering in the 1940s. The seemingly unhindered formation of a macroscopic nematic phase in a suspension of hard platelets was linked with gelation in suspensions of clay platelets.

Determination of splay and twist relaxation modes in nematic liquid crystals from dynamic light scattering experiments

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the dynamics of a nematic liquid crystal using photon correlation spectroscopy. Glass substrates were sonicated in refined deionized water. In addition, a nematic cell supporting buffed polyimide alignment layers on the inner surfaces of he glass plate substrate was prepared. Experimental results indicated two relaxation modes at scattering angles 40 degrees < 0 < 65 degrees.
