Electron spin-echo envelope modulation and pulse electron nuclear double resonance studies of Cu(super 2+)... beta-carotene interaction in Cu-MCM-41 molecular sieves

Article Abstract:

Perdeuterated all trans beta-carotene imbedded in activated Cu-MCM-41 was examined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electron spin-echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) spectroscopies. ESEEM and pulse electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) studies of Cu(super 2+)-Car (carotenoids) complex in Cu-MCM-41 provided new information about the interaction between transition-metal ion and carotenoids.

Deprotonation of carotenoid radical cation and formation of a didehydrodimer

Article Abstract:

The study gives evidence that in the chemical oxidation of Carotenoids (Car), a didehydrodimer (#Car)2[probably (#Car)2(5-5)] can be formed from #Car., which in turn is the deprotonation product of Car(super .+). The deprotonation is found to be enhanced in water.

Reaction of carotenoids and ferric chloride: Equilibria, isomerization, and products

Article Abstract:

It is proposed that in the oxidation of carotenoids with FeCl3, there exist equilibria among the carotenoid, the radical cation, dication, and various inorganic species. The radical cation and dication were found to abstract an electron from Fe(super 2+).
