A model for the activated energy transfer within eumelanin aggregates

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to analyze the photophysical processes that arise in large eumelanin aggregates following the absorption of UV-A radiation. The nonexponential emission decay is believed to be a reflection of the structural disorder of eumelanin.

A hierarchical self-assembly of eumelanin

Article Abstract:

Atomic force microscopy is used to examine the structure of a nature eumelanin isolated from the ink sacs of cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis). Results show that the self-assembly of Sepia enumelanin is a hierarchical process with small units assembling into hundred-nanometer structures, which then aggregate to form the morphology of the macroscopic pigment.

Explanation for the disparity among absorption and action spectra of eumelanin

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the optical properties of eumelanin (from Sepia officinalis) are discussed. The differences in size distributions for the natural and synthetic eumelanins could explain the observed differences in rates of radical production and oxygen consumption for the synthetic and natural samples.
