First-principles calculations of migration energy of lithium ions in halides and chalcogenides

Article Abstract:

First-principles calculations were performed to examine the migration of Li(super plus) ions through the vacancy mechanism in lithium halides with the rocksalt and hypothetical zinc blende structures and lithium chalcogenides with the antifluorite structure. The findings show a migration path similar to that in the charged-sphere model, indicating that electrostatic attractive interactions play a dominant role in the inter-ion interactions in Li(sub 2)O and, therdefore, in the ion migration.

Lithium intercalation properties of octatitanate synthesized through exfoliation/reassembly

Article Abstract:

Lithium intercalation properties of octatitanate synthesized through exfoliation/reassembly process, denoted reassembled-octatitanate, are examined and compared with those of octatitanate prepared without the exfoliation/reassembly process. The reversible capacity and energy efficiency of reassembled-octatitanate are larger than those of a conventional octatitanate and the exfoliation/reassembly process is found to be effective in improving the electrode performance.

First isolation of individual silicate platelets from clay exfoliation and their unique self-assembly into fibrous arrays

Article Abstract:

A study reports the first isolation of thin silicate platelets in a dimension of approximately 80 x 80 x 1[nm.sup.3] by a newly developed process involving one-step exfoliation of natural montmorillonite clay and toluene/aqueous NaOH extraction. Results show that individual platelets possessing high-aspect-ratio dimension and ionic character are able to self-assemble into microscale fiber bundles after water evaporation.
