Friction and adhesion hysteresis of fluorocarbon surfactant monolayer-coated surfaces measured with the surface forces apparatus

Article Abstract:

The friction and adhesion properties of a fluorocarbon surfactant were examined. In particular, a hysteresis study was conducted on fluorocarbon surfactant monolayer-coated surfaces. The surface forces apparatus served as the equipment of choice for the laboratory measurements. Abrupt fluctuations in the F and S were observed at low loads and temperatures. A correlation between the adhesion hysteresis and friction forces was established. Moreover, the data suggest that chain interdigitation does not participate in the friction and adhesion hysteresis of fluorocarbon surfaces.

Molecular interactions and C[O.sub.2]-philicity in supercritical C[O.sub.2]: A high-pressure NMR and molecular modeling study of a perfluorinated polymer in scC[O.sub.2]

Article Abstract:

A combination of high-pressure, high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and molecular modeling study is employed to observe the perfluorinated polymer of scC[O.sub.2], in order to analyze the philicity of a carbon dioxide in its supercritical molecule. The results show that such fluorinated molecules exhibit higher solubility, as compared to the nonfluorinated analogues, which explains the fundamental differences found in the nature of interactions of both the molecules.

Dynamic friction by polymer/surfactant mixtures adsorbed on surfaces

Article Abstract:

A cationic polyelectrolyte was adsorbed on mica from highly concentrated solutions. The friction and surface force behaviors of the adsorbed layers in aqueous media were studied using a new homemade surface force apparatus (SFA).
