From oil-swollen wormlike micelles to microemulsion droplets: a static light scattering study of the L1 phase of the system water + C12E5 + decane

Article Abstract:

Static light scattering in the water-rich region of the phase diagram at constant temperature was used to investigate the microstructure of the ternary system pentaethyleneglycol monododecyl ether, decane and water. Micellar size and shape were determined along several psedobinary sections of constant oil-to-surfactant ratio. The data analysis supported the presumed existence of wormlike micelles at low alpha. The molar mass Mw of the micelles increased with increasing oil content at given overall solute concentration, but decreased rapidly as oil content was further increased.

Surface relaxation of a hexagonal lyotropic mesophase

Article Abstract:

The influence of the free surface on the structure of the hexagonal lyotropic mesophase (H1) of the binary surfactant system pentaoxyethylene-n-dodecylether + water may be analyzed using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. The reflected diffraction patterns consist of hexagonally arranged discrete spots showing that the orientation of lattice planes is parallel to the surface. Experimental evidence shows the coexistence of two lattices with different d-spacings. Diffraction data indicates the existence of a surface layer of hexagonally packed micelles.

Structural transition of oil-swollen cylindrical micelles of C12E5 in water studied by SANS

Article Abstract:

The effect of added oil on the local structure of oil-swollen cylindrical micelles of C12E5 + decane + water is investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The conclusion states that the decrease of the molar mass results from a decrease of the micellar contour length whereas the mass per unit length of the aggregates increases almost linearly over the entire range of oil content.
