GERMANY: INITIATIVE FOR FLAT SCREENS

Article Abstract:

On the initiative of the IMM microtechnology institute of Mainz (Institut fur Mikrotechnik Mainz), 24 German companies got together to draw up a strategy to enhance Germany's competence in the world market for flat screens. The members of the initiative propose the setting up of production lines for both AM-LCD (active liquid crystal displays) and OLED (organic light-emitting diodes) displays in Germany. An AM-LCD production plant is estimated at to require an investment of DM 350mn-400mn. Series production could start after two years, making flat screens for the automotive industry and special applications. The schedule for OLEDs entails a 2-3-year research and development period. After that a pilot plant (DM 50mn) would need about two years to start series production. The backers of the initiative are hoping for public subsidies and venture capital finance for the proposed investments. Among the partners of the initiative, Merck KGaA of Darmstadt holds 50% of the world market for liquid crystals. Covion Organic Semiconductors GmbH of Frankfurt is said to be the world's only producer of OLEDs. Schott Display GmbH of Mainz produces special thin glass types for flat screens.
