GERMANY: PAINT MAKERS REMAIN OPTIMISTIC

Article Abstract:

The optimism of German paint industry federation VdL for year 2000 is based on continuing keen demand from the automotive industry and its suppliers but also on an anticipated recovery in the engineering and electrical technology sectors and in construction. Especially the sales of architectural paints are expected to pick up. About 30% of paints sold in Germany are used in industrial applications. In value terms the share is about 50%. The country's annual consumption of automotive OEM paints exceeds 90,000 tonnes. VdL reports that in 1999 Germany's production of paints and colours increased 2% to 2.05mn tonnes. In value terms, production grew 3% to EUR 4.55bn. Sales to the home market rose 1% to 1.7mn tonnes, while value growth was 2%. Exports increased 2% in volume.

GERMANY: STAGNATION SEEN IN COATINGS DEMAND

Article Abstract:

The industry association VdL predicts demand for paints and varnishes on the German market to remain unchanged in year 2001. In 2000 sales grew 1%. Demand for architectural paints, which account for more than 50% of Germany's production, declined considerably. A 5% fall is reported in the sales volume of interior decorating paints and synthetic resin plasters. The sales of industrial coatings grew 7%. For the first time, the automotive industry was not the main motor of growth. Production volumes of OEM and aftermarket automotive coatings were down from the year earlier. According to preliminary figures, Germany's production of paints and varnishes in year 2000 amounted to 2.1mn tonnes (up 2%) worth EUR 4.7bn (up 3%). Exports increased 10% to EUR 1.33bn.
