IRAN: GROWTH SEEN IN COATINGS DEMAND

Article Abstract:

According to government plans, Iran's per capita consumption of paints and varnishes should reach 7 kg by year 2005, up from 2 kg in 1995/96, when total consumption amounted to about 120,000 tonnes. The 7 kg per capita figure would corresponds to a total consumption of 500,000 tonnes. There are estimated to be 400-600 paint and varnish producers in Iran, of which no more than 20-30 are large or medium-sized manufacturers. The industry's combined production capacity is about 400,000 tpy, while production is considerably lower. The government's aim is 100% self-sufficiency in paints and varnishes. The country's import demand for paint raw materials is estimated at US$ 100mn annually. Iranian producers are interested in cooperation with foreign partners in order to gain knowhow. Sahar Co, which has an annual capacity of 13,000-14,000 tonnes, wants to increase production under foreign licences. The Iran-German Paint Ind. Co, a joint venture, is to start production soon with an annual capacity of 9,000 tonnes of industrial coatings.
