In situ vibrational spectroscopy studies of supported niobium oxide catalysts

Article Abstract:

The infrared spectra of bulk hydrated niobia (Nb2O5*nH2O) and niobia supported on SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 and TiO2 were measured at both low and high loadings to investigate the structural models of surface NbOx species. Results indicated that the NbOx surface species are present as a mono-oxo moiety and that the 980 cm-1 fundamental vibrational mode is best assigned to a mono-oxo Nb=O species. Observation of the hydroxyl region suggested that the higher frequency surface hydroxyls on the SiO2, Al2O3, ZrO2 and TiO2 supports are titrated preferentially as nobia loading is increased.

Deposition of Ru adatoms on Pt using organometallic chemistry: catalysts for electrooxidation of MeOH and adsorbed carbon monoxide

Article Abstract:

Experiments were performed to investigate the adsorption of ruthenium (Ru) adatoms on synthesized black platinum (Pt) surfaces through hydrogenation. The catalytic function of the Pt surfaces in the oxidation of MeOH and adsorbed carbon monoxide in sulfuric acid electrolytes was examined. Hydrogenation produced rough Pt-Ru adatoms surfaces with known specific surface areas and with acceptable control over surface stoichiometry. Moreover, the Pt-Ru adatom surfaces exhibited stable electrochemical properties.
