Interaction of ionomers and polyelectrolytes with divalent transition metal cations (Cu2+ and VO2+): a study by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and viscosimetry

Article Abstract:

Electron spin resonance spectroscopy and viscosimetry were used in examining the interactions between ionomers and polyelectrolytes and the divalent transition metal cations, Cu2+ and VO2+. The polymeric systems used in the study were poly(ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) ionomer, perfluorinated ionomer, poly(acrylic acid) and poly(styrene sulfonic acid). Results indicated that the interactions are dependent not only on the type of solvent but also on the ionic groups in the polymer, the type of counterions and the pH.

Self-assembling in nafion perfluorinated ionomers based on ESR spectra of novel fluorinated nitroxide spin probes

Article Abstract:

ESR spectra of three fluorinated nitroxide radicals with different lengths of the fluorinated side chain are measured in neat solvents and in Nafion solutions and membranes swollen by water. The assessment of the sensitivity of the probes to the local environment in terms of dynamics and range of the magnetic parameters are studied.
