Light harvesting and photoprotective functions of carotenoids in compact artificial photosynthetic antenna designs

Article Abstract:

The light-harvesting and photoprotective function of carotenoids in simple artificial photosynthetic antennas that consist of a phthalocyanine (Pc) moiety, to which a pair of carotenoids have been covalently linked in an axial way is discussed. It is shown that the carotenoids serve as excellent electron donors to phthalocyanine in triads 1 and 2 when the molecules are dissolved in a polar solvent.

Lotus effect amplifies light-induced contact angle switching

Article Abstract:

A rough surface morphology is shown to amplify the light induced change in water contact angle of a photoresponsive surface. The amplification of the reversible light-induced wetting angle change for fractionally rough surfaces are expected to apply to other types of stimuli-induced contact angle changes such as that by heat or electrical potentials.

Kinetic studies on the tensile state of water in trees

Article Abstract:

A molecular kinetic model for tensile water formation and turnover is presented which is found to be mathematically equivalent with an autocatalytic reaction. Water is handled in the form of microcanonical ensembles and transformed into a stretched, metastable icelike state with stronger hydrogen bonding and increased heat of evaporation.
