Methanol oxidation on rhodium as probed by surface-enhanced Raman and mass spectroscopies: adsorbate stability, reactivity, and catalytic relevance

Article Abstract:

The correlation between surface speciation and catalytic activity/selectivity during methanol oxidation over polycrystalline rhodium was investigated under ambient-pressure flow-reactor conditions. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy was used for this purpose in combination with parallel mass spectrometric calculations. Observed surface intermediate reactivity was compared with overall rates of product formation. The mechanisms for the formation and removal of lattice Rh2O3 were also examined.

In situ investigation of acetonitrile adsorption on [Al.sub.2][O.sub.3]-coated Ca[F.sub.2] using sum-frequency spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

Sum-frequency spectroscopy (SFS) is used to investigate the interface between a model catalyst support ([Al.sub.2][O.sub.3]-coated Ca[F.sub.2]) and liquid consisting of neat acetonitrile and acetonitrile in ethanol. The lack of curvature in the isotherm has indicated the lack of affinity for the surface by acetonitrile in ethanol.
