Micellar effects on the kinetics of cerium(IV) oxidation and the cerium(IV)-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction with methyl-, ethyl-, or benzylmalonic acid

Article Abstract:

The kinetics of the oxidation of methyl- (MeMA), ethyl- (EtMA), or benzylmalonic (BzMA) acid by ceric ions and the cerium(IV)-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction with these substrates were investigated at 20 degrees C in stirred batch conditions in the absence and the presence of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium nitrate (CTAN). In the absence of surfactants, the BZ systems with MeMA and EtMA exhibit oscillatory behavior after an induction period. In the presence of CTAN, all showed oscillations after an induction period that is very much shortened by increasing CTAN concentration.

Chemical reactivity in AOT microemulsions: kinetics of water displacement in a square-planar palladium(II) aquo complex by monoalkylthioureas

Article Abstract:

The water replacement kinetics involving the reaction of the cationic palladium(II) complex, [Pd(Et4dien)(H2O)]2+, where Et4dien = Et2N(CH2)2(NH)(Ch2)2NEt2, to bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT)-stabilized without microemulsions was examined by using nucleophile thiourea, methylthiourea and ethylthiourea. The kinetic data indicated the presence of a weak partitioning of nucleophiles between the water core and the AOT interface while the palladium complex was intensely linked with the negatively charged surfactant interface.

Rate effects of AOT-stabilized microemulsions on reactions of ligand substitution in cationic palladium(II) complexes

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the rate effects of AOT-stabilized microemulsions on reactions of ligand substitution in cationic palladium(II) complexes. The palladium(II) complexes were prepared using the standard procedure and characterized spectrophotometrically. The reactions investigated permitted the examination of the kinetic effects of steric hindrance and hydrophobicity resulting from the alkyl substituents of both the entering and leaving ligands.
