Mixtures of monomeric and dimeric cationic surfactants

Article Abstract:

The Krafft temperatures of five dimeric surfactants and that of a monomeric surfactant were determined from conductivity measurements. At 46.5 degrees Celsius, the conductivities of the surfactants and the dimeric surfactants with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), nonideal binary mixtures were obtained. Findings indicate that the nonideality is due to the tendency of the dimeric surfactants to form ropelike micelles, especially with the increase in the length of the terminal chains and the decrease in the length of the spacer.

Novel gemini micelles from dimeric surfactants with oxyethylene spacer chain. Small angle neutron scattering and fluorescence studies

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the synthesis of novel gemini surfactants supporting mono-, di- and trioxyethylene spacer chains. Small angle neutron scattering cross sections from the micellar aggregates of dimeric amphiphiles were determined in aqueous media. The surfactants were prepared by refluxing the alpha,w-dibromoalkoxyalkanes with N,n-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethylamine in dry ethanol. Experimental results indicated that micellar morphology correlated with the nature and length of the spacer chain.

Membrane-forming properties of pseudoglyceryl backbone based gemini lipids possessing oxyethylene spacers

Article Abstract:

The physical characterizations of membranes, formed from the gemini lipids bearing oxyethylene units between the cationic ammonium headgroups, are described. It is concluded that oxyethylene units between the headgroups bring remarkable changes in the membrane properties of the gemini lipids as compared to the monomeric lipid bearing only one headgroup.
