Molecule-molecule versus molecule-substrate interactions in the assembly of oligothiophenes at surfaces

Article Abstract:

A joint experimental and theoretical approach for the study of the assembly of end-substituted oligothiophenes at surfaces with different polarities is presented. The studies of the self-assembly at surfaces of oligothiophenes end-capped with oligo(ethylene oxide) or hexyl groups show that the molecule-molecule interactions and the molecule-substrate interactions are both at work and lead to well-defined nanostructures, from two dimensional ultrathin regular layers to one dimensional fibrillar objects.

Lattice contraction and surface stress of fcc nanocrystals

Article Abstract:

General equations for lattice contraction and surface stress of fcc nanocrystals are established based on the Laplace-young equation and a consideration for the size-dependence of the solid-liquid interface energy. The results indicate that the values of surface stress and strain are related with the measurable materials constants.

Size-dependent surface energies of nanocrystals

Article Abstract:

Based on a previous model for the size-dependent cohesive energy, a model for size-dependent surface energy of nanocrystals is established. The experimental and theoretical results of the developed model for several metallic elements are presented.
