Morphology of carbon supported Pt-Ru electrocatalyst and the CO tolerance of anodes for PEM fuel cells

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the morphology of carbon supported Pt-Ru electrocatalyst and the CO tolerance of anodes for polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM) fuel cells. X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to characterize the platinum-ruthenium microstructures of the two electrocatalysts in the fabricated electrodes. Results reveal the absence of Pt-Ru metal-metal interaction in the commercial catalyst and that only ruthenium oxide signals were evident. It was also observed that the Pt-Ru alloy structure has better CO tolerance than nonalloy Pt-Ru structure.

Effect of the pre-treatment of carbon black supports on the activity of Fe-based electrocatalysts for the reduction of oxygen

Article Abstract:

The activity of Fe-based electrocatalysts increases steadily with the iron content at the lower end of the metal concentration range. This was gleaned from an experiment involving HNO(sub 3)/NH(sub 3) treatments of a carbon support, addition of Fe from inorganic precursors and a thermal treatment at 900 degrees Celsius under an inert atmosphere. Fe-based oxygen reduction electrocatalysts have been synthesized for use in polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Additional Fe ions were found to be adsorbed on the modified carbon black during the synthesis.
