NETHERLANDS: EFKA INAUGURATES FACTORY

Article Abstract:

Efka has inaugurated a new additive factory in Heerenveen, Netherlands. Investments in the plant with a capacity of 4mn kg amounted to Fl 10mn. Another Fl 5mn is to be invested in office and laboratory buildings in 1999. In the new factory, Efka is to produce plastic additives in addition to the existing product range, additives for coatings and printing inks. By 2003, Efka is to increase the number of employees to 120, 70 of which are to be employed in Heereveen. Turnover should grow to Fl 90mn-100mn by 2008, against Fl 30mn in 1997.

GERMANY: PATENT REJECTED DUE TO LANGUAGE

Article Abstract:

The European Court of Justice has upheld a ruling by the German Patent Office, which held that a patent application by BASF to the European Patent Office for a sealing of automotive coatings is not valid in Germany. The Patent Office justified the decision with the fact that the application was in English and there was no German translation.

RUSSIA: AKZO NOBEL FREEZES INVESTMENT

Article Abstract:

Akzo Nobel has frozen plans to set up a coatings factory in Balashike in a 60:40 joint venture with the Russian company Roskhemet. The US$ 10mn plant with an annual capacity of 10,000 tonnes was to go on stream in mid-1999. Akzo Nobel prefers to wait until the current financial and political turbulence in Russia has cleared.
