Nanometer-scale organization of ethylene oxide surfactants on graphite, hydrophilic silica, and hydrophobic silica

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the adsorption of a series of alkylpoly(ethylene oxide) surfactants on graphite, hydrophilic silica and hydrophobic silica substrates to determine the role of the interactions between surfactant, solvent and a solid substrate. Findings suggested that the interaction between the graphite and the surfactant tail over the critical alkyl chain length is enough to orient a layer of alkyl tail groups parallel to the graphite surface. The headgroup was also found to play a significant role in determining the adsorbed structure.

Flip-flop in adsorbed bilayers

Article Abstract:

The quick exchange between molecules between an adsorbed bilayer and solution, occurring faster than within a few seconds, is supervised by an infrared spectroscopy, which independently monitors deuterium-labeled and unlabeled surfactants. It is shown that the flip-flop for an adsorbed layer is rapid at the interfaces and very slow in vesicles and that the rapid rate of flip-flop in adsorbed layers is an outcome of surface-induced defects.

Surface-induced phase behavior of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactants adsorbed to mica, silica, and graphite

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to analyze the effects of temperature on the organization of adsorbed alkyltrimethylammonium bromide surfactants using atomic force microscopy. Particular attention was given to whether there is a surface Krafft boundary.
