On the salt-induced stabilization of pair and many-body hydrophobic interactions

Article Abstract:

A study of the effects of NaCl on hydrophobic interactions at two different length scales through calculations of salt-dependent potential of mean force (PMF's) between methane molecules and the conformational equilibrium of a hydrophobic polymer in water is presented. It concludes that the addition of NaCl to the solution leads to a relative stabilization of compact conformations of hydrophobic solutes that is accompanied by a clear depletion of salt density in the solute vicinity.

Water-mediated three-particle interactions between hydrophobic solutes: size, pressure, and salt effects

Article Abstract:

The experiment was done using molecular dynamics simulations of solutions of hydrophobic solutes in explicit water to study the many body character of hydrophobic interactions at three-particle correlations. Results obtained highlighted both the range and magnitude of the many-body effects.

Salting-in and salting-out of hydrophobic solutes in aqueous salt solutions

Article Abstract:

An investigation on the thermodynamics and structural aspects of hydrophobic hydration in a variety of salt solutions is presented. The result indicated a range of behaviors from salting-in to salting-out depending on the size of salt ions.
