Measurement of the deformation and adhesion of rough solids in contact

Article Abstract:

The effect of deformation on the adhesion between a thermally evaporated thin gold film and molecularly smooth mica was investigated via a contact mechanics approach. Surface forces and applied loads were found to act to deform gold asperities in a nonreversible manner. The use of the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts theory to interpret the findings revealed that the bulk deformations proceed in a way whereby adhesion between bodies effectively increases as the load increases.

Dip-pen nanolithography of high-melting-temperature molecules

Article Abstract:

An investigation on the direct nanopatterning of a number of high-melting-temperature molecules is systematically conducted by dip-pen nanolithography (DPN). Water meniscus formation between the tip and substrate is observed to play a critical role in patterning high-melting-temperature molecules.
