Quantification of "local" surface orientation: theory and experiment

Article Abstract:

A scale-dependent theory for calculating the local surface normal tilt angle probability distribution is described. The method provides several advantages over other techniques used for determining substrate roughness contributions to spectroscopically determined molecular orientation. It is quantitative accurate at both smooth and relatively rough surfaces. It is also simple to perform and is based on easily obtainable roughness measures.

Molecular orientation at surfaces: surface roughness contributions to measurements based on linear dichroism

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze a quantitative theory for treating surface roughness contributions to molecular orientation measurements made by linear dichroism. Spectroscopic methods and previous approximations of surface roughness effects were examined. Results indicated that the theory can be extended to other spectroscopic methods. Findings also suggested the existence of a 'magic angle' in second-harmonic generation.

A unified treatment of selection rules and symmetry relations from sum-frequency and second harmonic spectroscopies

Article Abstract:

A simplifying treatment is developed for describing the molecular origins of electric dipole allowed sum-frequency generation (SFG) and second harmonic generation (SHG). The full sum-over-states expressions for the nonlinear polarizability simplify tremendously at or near resonance to straightforward formulas easily connected to intuitive molecular properties.
