Soft-landing isolation of vanadium-benzene sandwich clusters on a room-temperature substrate using n-alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayer matrixes

Article Abstract:

Vanadium-benzene 1:2 (VBz2) sandwich clusters were synthesized in gas-phase and deposited onto bare-gold and long-chain n-alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-coated gold substrate under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and investigated with IR reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). It was found that the VBz2 clusters deposited onto SAM substrates were highly oriented while there was no orientation preference of the clusters on bare gold substrate.

Room-temperature isolation of V[(benzene).sub.2] sandwich clusters via soft-landing into n-alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers

Article Abstract:

The infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) are used to study the adsorption state and thermal stability of V[(benzene).sub.2] sandwich clusters soft-landed onto a self-assembled monolayer of different chain-length n-alkanethiols. The results have confirmed that both the orientational preference and the high thermal stability of the clusters are due to the cluster penetration into the SAM matrix.

Collective reorientation in isolated smectic-C Langmuir monolayer droplets induced by line tension anisotropy

Article Abstract:

A reorientation phenomenon that takes place inside confined smectic-C (SmC) domains in a phase-segregated Langmuir film is reported. The process involves a sign reversal of the splay texture following the transient displacement of the central defect.
