Sorption and ordering of dibranched alkanes on medium-pore zeolites ferrierite and TON

Article Abstract:

The sorption of (methyl-substituted) pyridines and 2,2-dimethylalkanes on the medium-pore zeolites FER and TON are studied by in situ IR spectroscopy, calorimetry and gravimetry in order to describe sorption at the outer surface and the pore mouths of the zeolite crystals. The results prove the fraction of sites that are available for the 2,2-dimethylalkanes, which are unable to fully enter the pores of the zeolites studied.

Polar ordering at an interface between a liquid crystal monolayer and a rubbed polyimide

Article Abstract:

Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is used to study the way mechanical rubbing modifies the surface structure of a polyimide film and the way the rubbed polyimide surface aligns a liquid crystal monolayer adsorbed in it. The results reveal that rubbing would align the polymer chains and make the polymer surface more polar, and hence more SHG active.

A combined theoretical and experimental approach to determining order parameters of solutes in liquid crystals from (super 13)C NMR data

Article Abstract:

A combined theoretical and experimental procedure to evaluate the order parameters of solutes in liquid crystals is developed. The ordering properties of an anisotropic liquid crystal can be studied by recording (super 13)C NMR spectra at different temperatures for a number of rigid solutes.
