Steric effect in electron-molecule interaction

Article Abstract:

A steric effect is identified and measured for the first time, within the initial attachment step of the interaction of collimated electrons with preoriented molecules. When a flux of photoelectrons generated at the bulk metal strikes absorbed methyl bromide from the methyl end, the overall electron mediated reactivity has a cross section of Sigma = 3.0 * 10(super -19) cm(super 2), which is three times larger than the cross section determined for the bromine down configuration.

Photoinduced fragmentation of multilayer CH(sub 3)Br on Cu/Ru(001)

Article Abstract:

The effect of broadband UV irradiation (230-420 nm) on the photo and thermal process within CH(sub 3)Br multilayers deposited on Cu(2ML)/Ru(001) relative to the monolayer is investigated. Experimental data based on electrostatic model explains the basis of photogenerated charges distributed within the molecular dielectric matrix, with the photoelectrons penetration depth as a parameter.

Theoretical modeling of steric effect in electron-induced desorption: CH(sub 3)Br/O/Ru(001)

Article Abstract:

A theoretical model is presented to examine steric effects in electron-adsorbate interactions. The model is based on a short-lived anionic excited state formed by vertical photoelectron transition. The Br-up configuration is calculated to have a much larger desorption cross section.
