Studies on the effect of Li2SO4 on the structure of lithium borate glasses

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the role of sulfate ions in altering the structure of lithium borate glasses. The possible formation of sulfoborate-type units was examined. Results indicated the existence of sulfoborate-type units in Raman spectra in the region of 800-960 cm(super -1). Findings also showed that four-coordinate boron atoms are retained in the glass structure to a greater extent in sulfate-containing glasses than in pure lithium borate glasses.

Oxidation of ordered Sn/Pt(III) surface alloys and thermal stability of the oxides formed

Article Abstract:

Two well-characterized Pt-Sn surface alloys were oxidized at 300 K by ozone exposure in UHV to permit an examination of the thermal stability of the oxides formed. Results showed that both alloys were less reactive than Pt(III). However, the p(2x2) alloy (O(Sub Sn) = 0.25) was found to be more reactive than the (/3x/3)R30 degrees alloy (O(sub Sn) = 0.33). The relative ozone dissociative sticking coefficients were 1.0:0.79:0.33, respectively.

Spectroscopic characterization of sol-gel-derived mixed oxides

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to characterize sol-gel-derived mixed oxides using 2,4-pentanedione as the complexing/templating agent. Different mixedoxides were prepared with a 1:1 molar ratio using 2,4-pentanedione as the complexing agent. A Coulter SA 3100 instrument and a gas volumetric technique were utilized to determine surface areas. Experimental results indicated well-defined structures in Al2O3-SiO2 and TiO2-SiO2 mixed oxides.
