The effect of halogen substitution in self-assembled monolayers of 4-mercaptobiphenyls on noble metal substrates

Article Abstract:

A detailed characterization of the 4'-substituted 4-mercaptobiphenyls self-assembled monolayers on polycrystalline (111) gold and silver substrates was discussed. The molecules were found to bind to the substrate through a thiolate linkage, whereas the biphenyl backbone had an upright orientation with an average tilt angle of about 19-22 degree for gold and 17-19 degree for silver.

Odd-even affects at the S-metal interface and in the aromatic matrix of biphenyl-substituted alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers

Article Abstract:

The synchrotron-based high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS) is used to monitor the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs)/metal interface in the biphenyl-substituted alkanethoil (BPn) SAMs. The tunebility of the HRXPS was found helpful in the observation of the odd-even effects and the technique was also found to suit the characterization of SAMs/substrate interface.

Adsorption of alkanethiols and biphenylthiols on Au and Ag substrates: a high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study

Article Abstract:

Synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was applied to monitor the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAM) of alkanethiols (AT) and biphenylthiols on Au and Ag substrates. The experimental data indicate several slightly different adsorption geometries for the AT moieties in AT/Au.
