The structure and thermodynamics of ion association and solvation of some thiocyanates and nitrates in 2-methoxyethanol studied by conductometry and FTIR spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

The nature of various types of interactions prevailing in solutions of potassium thiocyanate (KCNS), ammonium thiocyanate (NH4CNS), sodium nitrate(NaNO3), and ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) in 2-methoxyethanol from precise measurements on electrical conductivity and Fourier transform infrared spectral (FTIR) measurements is reported. Results indicate that all of the electrolytes are found to exist essentially as solvent-separated dimers or both in 2-methoxyethanol solutions.

Thermodynamics of ion association and solvation in 2-methoxyethanol: behavior of tetraphenylarsonium, picrate, and tetraphenylborate ions from conductivity and ultrasonic data

Article Abstract:

Results show that all the salts studied exhibited strong association with 2-methoxyethanol and form ion pairs leading to a weakening in ion solvation. Data also indicate that the Coulombic forces play a major role in the association process.
