Thermotropic phase transition in soluble nanoscale lipid bilayers

Article Abstract:

The role of lipid domain size and protein- lipid interfaces in the thermotropic phase transition of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers in Nanodiscs was studied. The results provide the basis for the quantitative understanding of cooperative phase transitions in membrane bilayers in confined geometries at the nanoscale.

Softening of membrane bilayers by detergents elucidated by deuterium NMR spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

Studies done on the material properties of lipid bilayers on the mesoscopic scale using deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are reported. Results reveal a softening of the membrane bilayer by the presence of a nonionic detergent, which corresponds to a decrease of the elastic constants for continuum deformations of the membrane.

Membrane activity of biomimetic facially amphiphilic antibiotics

Article Abstract:

An interaction between biomimetic structures and different biological membranes is reported using both model vesicle and in vitro bacterial cell experiments. The results show that lipid composition is more important for selectivity than overall net charge.
