US: JOINT VENTURE FOR CARPET RECYCLING

Article Abstract:

Dutch DSM and US AlliedSignal are to found a 50:50 joint venture for the recycling of old nylon carpets. The old carpets are to be processed to caprolactam, which is the basic chemical for the production of polyamide 6. The joint venture, in which DSM and AlliedSignal will invest a total of more than US$ 80mn, will be named Evergreen Nylon Recycling LLC. At the site of DSM Chemicals North America in Augusta, Georgia, DSM and AlliedSignal started to set up a recycling plant which is to process about 90,000 tons of waste carpets annually. The factory is to produce about 45,000 tons of caprolactam per year. It is to start operation in autumn 1999. DSM is examining to set up a carpet recycling plant in Europe as well.

CHINA: LONZA, LCIC IN JOINT VENTURE

Article Abstract:

The Singapore arm of Lonza Intermediates and Additives of Switzerland and Liyang Chemical Industrial Co (LCIC) of China have set up a joint venture to produce and market pyromellith acid (benzoltetracarbon acid) and pyromellith acid anhydride. The new company that is controlled by Lonza will use production facilities of LCIC in Liyang and catalytic technology of Lonza, which will also contribute its marketing network. LCIC has an annual production capacity of 2,000 tonnes of the chemicals, for which it claims world market leadership. The chemicals are used in polyimides and powder coatings.

SLOVAKIA: JOINT VENTURE FOR POLYAMIDE FIBRES

Article Abstract:

Chemlon of Slovakia and Marioboselli Yarns SpA of Italy are to found the joint venture Twista. The new company is to take on the production facilities of Chemlon in Hummene and produce there polyamide fibres and filament yarn. An annual turnover of DM 4mn is planned. Chemlon belongs to Nylstar, a joint venture of Italian Snia BPD and French Rhodia. Nylstar, the largest European producer of textile polyamide filament yarn, is to invest L 100bn in eastern Europe within the next three years.
