Uptake of n-hexane, 1-butene, and toluene by Au/Pt bimetallic surfaces: A tool for selective sensing of hydrocarbons under high-vacuum conditions

Article Abstract:

The dissociative adsorption and decomposition on a range of metal surfaces of an alkane, an alkene, and an aromatic, all representative of species present in an important technological application, was studied under conditions relevant to selective gas sensing based on solid electrolyte potentiometry. It was found that at 870K, pure polycrystalline Pt surfaces do no discriminate between n-hexane, toluene and 1-butene, however, by varying the composition of polycrystalline bimetallic Pt/Au surfaces, good discrimination between these species can be achieved.

Adsorption and thermal chemistry of nitroethane on Si(100)-2 * 1

Article Abstract:

Surface chemistry of nitroethane on Si(100)-2 * 1 is investigated using multiple internal reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (MIR-FTIR), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and thermal desorption mass spectrometry. The concentration of nitrogen and oxygen remains constant on a surface within the temperature interval studied, whereas approximately half of the ethyl groups undergo hydrogen elimination, which releases ethylene and produces surface hydrogen.

Self-limiting heterogeneous reactions: Bifunctional hydrocarbon on a bimetallic alloy surface

Article Abstract:

The chemistry of 6-bromo-1-hexene on a Cu3Pt(111) surface was investigated by using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), temperature programmed reaction/desorption (TPR/D) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Results reveal that the processes occur within a specific coverage range, making the 6-bromo-1-hexene on the Cu3Pt(111) surface extremely attractive for analysis of kinetics of coverage-dependent reactions.
