Vibrational study on dissacharide/H2O systems by inelastic neutron scattering, Raman, and IR spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

Inelastic neutron scattering, Raman spectroscopy, and Infrared spectroscopy experiments on pure water and on aqueous solutions of homologous disaccharides, such as trehalose and sucrose, are presented. The structural modifications induced on water by trehalose and sucrose to look for different structural arrangements that could account for their different effectiveness as bioprotectors are examined.

Vibrational dynamics studies by inelastic light scattering

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the vibrational dynamics of alpha,alpha-trehalose-water solutions. O-H stretching region analysis was carried out using a decomposition of the isotropic spectra into an open and closed contribution along with a spectral stripping procedure. Experimental results indicated that trehalose hinders the crystallization process and minimizes the amount of freezable water.

Structural and vibrational properties of trehalose: a density functional study

Article Abstract:

Density functional theory in the gradient-corrected local-density approximation is applied to determine the structural properties and harmonic vibrational modes of trehalose in the gas phase and in the monohydrate crystal. The density functional results are used to assess the quality of a recent molecular mechanics model.
