Kinetic effect induced by cellulose on water-catalyzed reactions: hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrophenyl cellulose xanthate and some sugar xanthate ester analogues

Article Abstract:

The kinetic effects cellulose brings to water-catalyzed reactions has been studied. Hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrophenyl cellulose xanthate and some sugar xanthate ester analogues has been shown. Hydrolysis of 2,4-dinitrophenyl cellulose xanthate (CelXDNP) in 10% v/v aqueous ethanol at 25 degrees Celsius and mu = 0.1 (KCl) has been considered. From the water-catalyzed hydrolysis it can be seen that the hydrolysis involves two parallel reactions whose rate constants have been determined. The fast hydrolysis of cellulose xanthate esters does not involve the neighboring OH effect.

Isotope effects in nucleophilic substitution reactions X: the effect of changing the nucleophilic atom on ion-pairing in an S-sub-N 2 reaction

Article Abstract:

Isotope effects have been studied in nucleophilic substitution reactions. Changing the nucleophilic atom for ion-pairing in an S-sub-N 2 reaction seems to alter the secondary alpha-deuterium kinetic isotope effect and the substituent effect that is found by changing the para substituent on the nucleophile when the nucleophile is sodium thiophenoxide. Effects of ion pairing seem to differ because ion pairing does not significantly affect the electron density of the hard oxygen atom of the sodium phenoxide.
