Regular polyhedral molecules: P20 and its inclusion compounds

Article Abstract:

The possibility of the existence of polyhedral molecules made up of one element has been hypothesized and investigated based on geometrical aspects of regular polyhedrons. The regular dodecahedron made up of phosphorus atoms was a very promising candidate and the P20 molecule was subjected to high-level ab initio calculations. Predictions of thermodynamic and kinetic stability were made. Vibrational analysis and natural bond orbital analysis were carried out and inclusion of some elements in the structure was considered. Stabilizing agents that might in time act as stable inclusion compounds and the high kinetic stability predicted make it possible to say that this molecule may in fact exist.

Potential applications of the boron cluster compounds

Article Abstract:

The unique molecular structure, nonclassical bonding and unusual chemistry of boron cluster compounds present vast opportunities for their practical use. Their high cost limits their applications to areas where no alternatives exist. The very few established uses of boron clusters along with potential application areas are presented. Particular emphasis is laid on uses based on the unique solubility of their salts, their high thermal and chemical stability, their catalytic properties as well as on the dimensional and electronic properties of elemental boron. The optical transparency of closo-polyheteroboranes are also noted.
