Spider silk: Ancient ideas for new biomaterials
Article Abstract:
The unique mechancical properties of spider silk, particularly, the proteins that comprise the silks and their sequences, which have provided key information that relates directly to these properties, are discussed in the context of silk fibers. It is observed that the conservation of sequence is focused on certain amino acids which have not changed for nearly 250 million years and that the protein present in the fiber is a result of the design and a role the sequence plays in fiber formation.
