Synthesis of transportation fuels from biomass: Chemistry, catalysts, and engineering

Article Abstract:

The current methods and future possibilities for obtaining transportation fuels from biomass are discussed by including not only the chemistry and catalysis involved in the process but also engineering solutions and challenges as they have an important impact on the global process. The European Union (EU) is ready to support research on biomass to energy conversion processes, the bio-refinery concept to find valuable uses for all parts of the plant and second-generation biofuels for improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

From microporous to mesoporous molecular sieve materials and their use in catalysis

Article Abstract:

The mesoporous materials in microporous zeolite crystallites can be used in developing large pore molecular sieves. The approach involves the enhancement of microporous material activity for large molecule processing. Enantioselectic reactions on heterogeneized catalysts may also be achieved by employing chiral ligands in the preparation of mesoporous materials with large pores.

Chemical routes for the transformation of biomass into chemicals

Article Abstract:

Catalytic reactions which help to transform carbohydrates, vegetable oils, animal fats and terpenes into valuable chemicals and fine chemicals are reviewed and their applications are described. More focus is laid on chemical routes through heterogeneous catalysis and describing environmentally friendly catalytic processes.
