Automation Outlook: The Time Has Come to Abandon the Outmoded Standard Typewriter Keyboard

Article Abstract:

Christopher Sholes, the producer of the first production typewriter, invented the QWERTY keyboard layout to slow down typing speed so that the print mechanism of the first typewriters would not jam. A 1905 meeting attempted to establish a standard keyboard, but no agreement on a non-QWERTY layout could be reached, so the QWERTY layout became the de facto standard. Today, the Dvorak layout makes much more sense than the QWERTY. It is much easier to learn and use.
