Compaq lays out new IT service foundation

Article Abstract:

Compaq Computer Corp has announced support-related developments in its quest for reengineering its service business. The first is the creation of the COLinqPlus system which is intended as a major interface between the company and its 5,000 channel-based service providers that support its corporate customers. Second is the establishment of a customer support center in Atlanta, GA, which increases the firm's call center staff for corporate end users support by 37%.

Server shift rates high at Arbitron

Article Abstract:

Arbitron Co's migration from Hewlett-Packard systems to 64-bit Digital Unix not only improved the company's data processing but also reduced the support burden of its computer center. CIO John Panicker said there was also a reduction by 80% in the number of technicians required by the computer center. Panicker added that the displaced technicians were retrained as programmers or reassigned to support network operations.

Companies should consider on-site maintenance arrangements with the vendors of client/server hardware. On-site hardware services offer enormous benefits to organizations that hire them. These include cost savings, increased response time, and a steady flow of trained and experience technical workers. In addition, these vendors are providing on- site services as part of their marketing package to boost their sales.
