An evolution, not a revolution

Article Abstract:

While Microsoft Windows 98 is very similar to Windows 95, it is notable for improving built-in support for the newest hardware and other interface enhancements. The new OS is focused on the integrated Internet Explorer (IE). Users still have the option of choosing Netscape as default browser but they will not be able to get rid of IE completely. Windows 98 supports the new Win32 driver model (WDM) which guarantees that Windows NT and 98 can share hardware drivers. With Win98's built-in support for new hardware such as Universal Serial Bus devices and FireWire devices, the OS implements MMX instructions and Intel's Intercast technology. It also expands the desktop with multiple monitors and dual modems for greater bandwidth. Win98 also offers FAT32, a hard-disk file system that is more efficient and will benefit video editors.

Mission Control: dawn of the strategic Internet

Article Abstract:

Intranets are powerful tools that have been used by many of the biggest US companies to great effect. One study by International Data Corp. reports that Netscape customers saw a ten-fold return on investment with Netscape intranet software. Another study predicts 80% of Web servers will run intranet sites by the end of 1997, with around 70% of Fortune 1000 companies having developed or being in the process of developing intranets. Silicon Graphics' Intranet Junction contains templates and graphics to enable users to create and update intranet sections. Companies such as Apple Computer and Warner Brothers have built successful intranets. Intranets give workers a single point of access to the information they need to do their job.
