Article Abstract:

Until recently the microcomputer software industry was basically composed of small shops and dedicated companies such as Apple and IBM. Now the competition heightens with the entry of mainframe companies and corporations seeking to diversify. The market may reach $12 billion by 1990, according to Carolyn Morrill of Arthur D. Little. In order to survive, software producers will need to develop sophisticated marketing and advertising techniques and effective distribution channels. Quality and service will be important factors.
